David’s kindness is material: land is restored, labour is organised and Mephibosheth receives a durable place at the table.
Disability does not make him less worthy of belonging. Avoid readings that treat his body as a symbol of broken character.
The story also contains a large power imbalance. Genuine welcome should protect agency rather than require fearful gratitude to a powerful host.
Accessible belonging means more than invitation; it includes transport, seating, communication, resources and a voice in decisions.
