Friendship is sometimes described mainly as ease: shared interests, frequent conversation or people who make us feel understood. Jonathan’s friendship with David takes shape in a tense royal household and soon requires costly choices.
Read 1 Samuel 18:1–5, then trace the friendship through chapters 19 and 20. Notice how affection becomes action.
Reflect
Jonathan makes a covenant with David. Biblical covenant language gives the relationship weight and responsibility. This is not a promise to agree about everything; it is a commitment that shapes choices when pressure arrives.
The gifts are practical. A robe, belt, bow and weapons carry status and protection. Jonathan uses what he has to honour David rather than treating David’s growing calling as a threat to his own worth.
Later, Jonathan listens, investigates danger and speaks truth to Saul. Loyal friendship does not ask someone to remain exposed to harm. It can involve believing a friend, checking facts and using access or privilege to protect another person.
No human friendship should demand unlimited access, silence or the abandonment of wise boundaries. Jonathan and David invite us toward relationships where affection becomes trustworthy action, power is shared rather than hoarded and truth matters more than appearances.

Pray
God of faithful love, make us friends who listen, tell the truth and use what we have for another person’s good. Give us courage to protect, humility to share power and wisdom to honour healthy boundaries. Amen.
