Arrive
Rahab lives in a fortified city facing invasion. Every choice in Joshua 2 carries risk for her and for the people she hopes to protect.
Read Joshua 2:1–21. Pay close attention to how often Rahab directs the conversation and determines what happens next.
Reflect
Rahab hides the spies beneath flax on her roof and gives the king’s messengers a plausible route to pursue. She understands both the city and the immediate danger better than the visitors do.
Her long speech interprets the moment theologically. She has heard what Israel’s God has done, names the fear in Jericho and confesses God’s sovereignty.
Rahab then negotiates. She asks for a dependable sign and names the relatives whose lives must be protected. The spies survive because of her plan, and her household receives a promise because she insists upon it.
The surrounding conquest narrative is difficult and should not be softened into a cheerful spy game. Within that danger, Rahab’s courage is strategic, relational and purposeful. Faith can include asking direct questions, setting terms and using available knowledge to protect others.

- What decisions in the chapter belong to Rahab?
- How does she connect faith with protection for her household?
- Where might courage require planning and clear negotiation rather than impulsive action?
Pray
God who sees people living inside dangerous systems, honour courageous truth and protect those at risk. Give us wisdom to plan carefully, speak clearly and use what we know for the safety of others. Amen.
