Samuel hears his name, but he does not instantly understand what is happening. His first response is relational: he goes to Eli because he believes the older priest has called.
Read 1 Samuel 3:1–10. Notice how patience and guidance shape the moment.
Reflect
Samuel responds promptly each time. His willingness matters, but so does the fact that he initially misidentifies the voice. Sincerity and certainty are not the same thing.
Eli is slow to understand, yet he eventually changes course. He does not demand that Samuel manufacture an experience. He gives the child a simple posture of listening.
The wider chapter also contains a hard word about Eli’s household. Hearing God is not merely receiving comforting thoughts; it requires truth, humility and accountability.
Children especially should never be pressured to obey an adult who claims divine authority. Healthy discernment welcomes Scripture, trusted community, questions and safeguarding. God’s voice is not a tool for secrecy, manipulation or fear.

- What helps a community test spiritual claims safely and wisely?
Pray
God who calls by name, teach us to listen with humility. Give children trustworthy guides, protect them from manipulation and help every generation test what it hears with truth, wisdom and care. Amen.
