Arrive
Ruth, a Moabite widow, gleans for food. Boaz instructs workers not to harm her, ensures water access and recognises her search for refuge.
Read the passage slowly and notice Ruth’s vulnerability, the protections Boaz establishes and the resources she is allowed to access.
Reflect
The image of God’s wings becomes tangible through field rules, water, food and protection from harassment.
Boaz does not demand gratitude before acting. He uses workplace authority to make Ruth safer and less exposed.
Ruth still retains agency and voice. Welcome should not turn migrants or people in poverty into dependent mascots.
If we pray for refuge, we should examine wages, access, safeguarding and the rules that determine whether people can flourish.
Pause and notice
A few questions to sit with
- What risks does Ruth face?
- How does Boaz use authority?
- Which policy could make your workplace or church safer?
Pray
God of refuge, shelter people who cross borders and work in vulnerable conditions. Make our welcome practical, safe and respectful of agency. Amen.
