Clay jars were ordinary and breakable. The image removes glamour from ministry and locates value in the entrusted treasure.
Paul names pressure, confusion, persecution and being struck down. He does not pretend faithful service protects bodies from harm.
The “but not” phrases speak of sustaining grace, not limitless endurance. Fragility still needs rest, treatment, safety and shared support.
Leaders should never use this passage to demand burnout. God’s power is shown precisely because people are not treated as inexhaustible.
