A quick glance can confirm what we expected and change nothing. James describes another kind of looking: bending close, continuing and doing.
Read the verbs as a movement from attention to practice.
Reflect
Being quick to hear begins with making room for truth we did not generate. Slowness to speak and anger can interrupt reactive certainty.
James does not condemn every form of anger, but warns that human anger does not produce God’s justice. Moral energy needs humility and discipline.
The mirror exposes forgetfulness: hearing without embodied response. Yet the mirror is the law of freedom, not a weapon for shame.
Identify one clear invitation in the passage. Reduce it to an action small enough to do today, then return tomorrow and see whether hearing has become practice.
