Arrive

The strangest voice in Numbers 22 belongs to the character who has been treated most violently. The donkey sees the angel, moves to protect Balaam and is punished because he interprets her resistance as disobedience.

Read Numbers 22:21–35. Let the animal’s actions remain central.

Reflect

Three times the donkey responds to danger: she turns aside, presses against a wall and finally lies down. Each action makes sense once the angel is visible.

Balaam strikes her three times. The passage gives the donkey words that expose the injustice: has she ever behaved this way before? Familiar faithfulness should have made Balaam curious rather than violent.

When God opens Balaam’s eyes, the respected seer discovers that the animal perceived reality more clearly than he did. Religious role and spiritual vocabulary do not remove the need for humility.

Warnings often arrive through resistance, interruption or voices we have ranked beneath us. Faithful discernment pauses before punishing what disrupts a plan. It asks whether the obstacle may be protecting life and whether our anger is hiding our own limited sight.

Pray

God who opens eyes, forgive the harm caused by proud certainty and uncontrolled anger. Teach us to pause, listen to overlooked voices and recognise warnings that protect life. Amen.

Complete the road with a safe place to stop. The next time a plan is interrupted, pause for one full minute before reacting and ask what you may not yet see.
