Arrive
The familiar scenes of Jonah—ship, storm, fish, city and plant—belong to one sustained question about the reach of God’s compassion. Jonah obeys externally in chapter 3, but his heart remains opposed to mercy for Nineveh.
Use the story printable to trace Jonah’s movement and notice where God keeps meeting people he would rather avoid.
Reflect
The sailors pray, Nineveh repents and God shows concern for a vast city. The expected insiders and outsiders keep changing places, exposing Jonah’s assumption that he can predict who will respond well to God.
Obedience matters, but the story refuses to end when Jonah delivers the message. God continues working on the messenger. External compliance is not the same as sharing God’s compassion.
The final question includes people who do not know their right hand from their left and also many animals. Divine concern stretches across a whole inhabited place, including vulnerable life Jonah has reduced to an enemy label.
Jonah ends without recording the prophet’s answer. The open ending turns toward us. We are invited to decide whether our faith will become spacious enough to care about the flourishing and repentance of people beyond our chosen boundaries.

Pray
God whose compassion is larger than the city, keep forming more than my outward behaviour. Widen my attention to people, communities and creatures I have reduced to labels. Amen.
