Arrive

Jonah sits outside Nineveh hoping to see what will happen to the city. He is angry that God has shown mercy, yet God still provides shade for him.

Read Jonah 4:1–11 and hold together Jonah’s comfort, the plant’s short life and God’s final question.

Reflect

God cares for Jonah without endorsing his hostility. The plant offers bodily relief while the conversation about mercy remains unfinished. Care and correction are not opposites here.

Jonah becomes deeply attached to shade he did not grow. When it disappears, his grief over the plant exposes the narrowness of his compassion for a city full of people and animals.

The plant is a teaching gift. It helps Jonah feel, in miniature, the pain of losing something valued. God begins with an experience Jonah can understand and widens the moral frame.

We may also receive comfort while still needing transformation. Gratitude for shelter can become a doorway into compassion for lives beyond our immediate circle.
