Arrive

Esther’s story is often illustrated with gowns, jewels and a happy coronation. The biblical setting is more complicated. Young women are gathered by royal command, and the king who removed Vashti holds enormous power over what happens next.

Read Esther 2:5–20. Notice the choices Esther can make, the choices made for her and the relationships that help her navigate the court.

Reflect

Esther does not demand extra adornment. She follows the counsel of Hegai, and the text repeatedly notes the favour she receives. Her restraint is not passivity; it is one way she moves wisely through a system where open control is limited.

Becoming queen gives Esther access, but it does not make her safe. Later she will say that entering the king’s presence uninvited could cost her life. Influence and vulnerability can exist in the same person.

Esther also remains connected to Mordecai and to a Jewish identity not yet disclosed. The palace has not erased where she comes from, even when that belonging must be carried quietly for a time.

This keeps us from treating position as proof that everything is good. A title can create opportunities and still place someone under pressure. Faithful wisdom asks how influence can serve others, what safeguards are needed and how we remain connected to people who can tell us the truth.

Which parts of Esther’s situation can she influence, and which are controlled by the empire?
Why should becoming queen not be treated as a simple romantic ending?
How can a person use influence without losing connection to truthful community?

Pray

God of the vulnerable and the influential, give us wisdom inside systems we did not choose. Keep us connected to truth and community, and teach us to use every opportunity for the good of others. Amen.
