Arrive

Ten people call together from a distance. Their shared need has created a small community across boundaries, and Jesus responds to every one of them.

Read Luke 17:11–19. Count carefully: all ten go, all ten are cleansed and one returns.

Reflect

Jesus tells the group to show themselves to the priests. In the world of the passage, priestly recognition could affect whether they were permitted to resume ordinary community life. The instruction therefore concerns social restoration as well as bodies.

They are cleansed while going. All ten act on Jesus’ words before seeing the outcome. The text does not say the nine lose their healing or that they had no faith.

One person turns back, praises God loudly and falls at Jesus’ feet in thanks. Luke identifies him as a Samaritan, making the exemplary respondent someone religious insiders may have treated as suspect.

Gratitude is more than politeness. It recognises gift, crosses the distance back toward relationship and gives glory to God. Yet we should not use the story to shame sick people or demand thankfulness from those still suffering. Christian communities can honour gratitude while working for the belonging and practical restoration of everyone.

Jesus, have mercy on people carrying illness, stigma and exclusion. Receive our gratitude, restore community and teach us to honour faith wherever it appears. Amen.
