Immediately after condemning scribes who devour widows’ houses, Jesus watches a poor widow place her entire livelihood into the temple treasury.

Reflect

Jesus truly sees the widow and the scale of her gift; he does not measure generosity by headline totals.

The context prevents romanticising her destitution. Religious leaders have just been condemned for consuming widows’ households.

The scene can be read as both honour and indictment: a devoted woman gives all within a system that should have protected her.

Churches must never use this text to pressure poor people. Generosity requires transparency, consent and strong protection for essential needs.
