The sailors do not throw Jonah overboard casually. They row harder, pray for mercy and recognise the moral weight of what Jonah has told them to do.

Read Jonah 1:4–16 and watch how the pagan sailors become attentive, prayerful and reluctant while the prophet sleeps and then accepts responsibility.

Reflect

Jonah’s flight has placed strangers in danger. Private avoidance rarely remains private; other people often carry its weather. The passage asks us to notice who is working hardest because someone else refuses a calling.

The sailors resist an easy scapegoat. They try to reach land and pray before acting. Their hesitation protects the story from becoming a simple lesson about disposing of the person associated with a problem.

When the sea grows quiet, the sailors respond with reverence. The outsiders Jonah might underestimate are already learning to fear Yahweh, even before Jonah agrees to go toward Nineveh.

Responsibility can require an honest admission that our choices have affected others. Repair begins by stopping the flight, listening to those caught in the storm and accepting the next truthful consequence.
