Passage context

Balak has summoned Balaam to curse Israel. Although Balaam has received limits from God, he sets out with Moabite officials, and the narrative says God’s anger is kindled as he goes.

Devotional introduction

The donkey is alert and physically coherent, while the angel’s sword is lowered rather than presented as sensational violence. The unfinished road highlights interruption and changed perception.

Reflect

The donkey repeatedly protects Balaam from danger and is struck for doing so. Complete the scene by honouring the warning Balaam could not see. Spiritual status does not make a person incapable of blindness or excuse harm.

  2. What should her previous faithfulness have prompted him to ask?
  3. When might an interruption or less-powerful voice reveal something you have missed?

Prayer prompt

God who opens eyes, forgive the harm caused by proud certainty and uncontrolled anger. Teach us to pause, listen to overlooked voices and recognise warnings that protect life. Amen.
