Jonah prays from inside the fish. He has been rescued from drowning, but he is still confined, disoriented and waiting. His prayer gathers language that echoes the Psalms.
Read the whole prayer and notice what Jonah remembers, what he names and what remains unresolved.
Reflect
Jonah calls from affliction rather than from a carefully prepared place. Prayer begins where he is, not where he thinks a faithful person ought to be.
The words are both personal and borrowed. Familiar Scriptural language gives Jonah a vocabulary when his own may be hard to find. Borrowed prayer is not less sincere; it can carry us when distress narrows speech.
He says God has heard before he is back on dry land. Being heard and being immediately released are not identical. The prayer holds trust inside an unfinished rescue.
Jonah’s later anger shows that surviving a crisis does not complete a person’s formation. Rescue is real, and there is still more mercy for him to learn.
