Jonah finally enters Nineveh and announces a brief message. The city’s response is much larger than his sermon: people believe, fast and turn from violence.

Reflect

Jonah’s words announce a deadline, but the chapter reveals that warning can serve mercy. The threatened future is not treated as fate that makes repentance pointless.

Nineveh is an imperial city associated with violence. Its response therefore cannot be reduced to private regret. The king calls people to turn from evil ways and from the violence in their hands.

God sees what they do, not merely what they say. Repentance becomes visible as a changed direction. The story does not ask readers to excuse past harm; it imagines people interrupting it.

A warning can be grace when it tells the truth early enough for a different action. The question is not only whether we feel sorry, but whether our hands and systems begin to change.
