Arrive
The first named person to respond to the gospel in Philippi is a woman whose work connects her with trade, resources and a household. Lydia is already a worshipper of God and already gathered with other women for prayer.
Read Acts 16:11–15 and 16:40. Notice what Lydia receives and what she immediately contributes.
Reflect
The meeting begins outside the city gate by a river. God’s work is not confined to an established building or to the people a visitor might assume hold influence.
Luke says the Lord opens Lydia’s heart to pay attention. Her response includes baptism, but it also becomes practical hospitality. She offers her household as a place where the missionary group can stay and, later in the chapter, a place where believers gather.
Lydia’s business should not be treated as an incidental detail. Purple cloth was valuable, and her work suggests networks, skill and economic agency. She brings the life she already has into partnership with the gospel.
Attentive faith is not passive. It listens closely, responds freely and asks how existing work, space and influence can serve a wider community. Lydia reminds the church to recognise leadership where God has already been cultivating it, including among women whose contribution has too often been described only as helpful background.

Pray
God who meets people by the river, open our hearts to attend to your word. Help us recognise the gifts and leadership already present, and teach us to offer our work, homes and influence with wise hospitality. Amen.
