Arrive

The Emmaus travellers speak in the past tense of disappointed hope: “we had hoped.” Jesus is near before they understand who walks beside them.

Read the passage slowly. Notice the people, movements and repeated words before trying to turn it into a lesson.

Reflect

Jesus asks what they are discussing and receives their account. Accompaniment begins by allowing grief to tell its story.

He opens the Scriptures within that relationship. Interpretation connects suffering and hope without making their confusion foolish or irrelevant.

Recognition comes in the breaking of bread after the travellers offer hospitality. The ordinary table becomes a place where Scripture and presence meet.

They return to community with news, not private superiority. Hope turns them back toward others who also need the story.

Pause and notice

A few questions to sit with

  1. Where do you hear “we had hoped” in your own life?
  2. What does Jesus do before explaining?
  3. Whom could you welcome into unhurried conversation or a meal?

Pray

Risen Jesus, walk beside us when hope is difficult to recognise. Open Scripture, warm our hearts and make our tables places of welcome and truth. Amen.

Carry it with you

Add an open chair, then invite someone to an unhurried meal, walk or conversation this week.
