Arrive
Samuel sees Eliab and immediately thinks the search is over. God interrupts the assumption before it becomes a decision.
Reflect
Human beings often attach leadership, goodness or competence to appearance, charisma and familiarity. The text exposes how quickly even a prophet can do this.
God’s vision is different, but that does not make our private impressions infallible. Humility requires evidence, time, listening and accountable discernment.
David is initially outside the room doing ordinary care work. The person overlooked by the selection process is already carrying responsibility.
A faithful community examines whose gifts remain unseen because of age, disability, class, race, gender or communication style, then changes the conditions that keep them absent.
Pause and notice
A few questions to sit with
- What assumption does God correct?
- Who was missing from the room?
- Which process could be changed so overlooked gifts are genuinely heard?
Pray
God who sees beyond appearance, correct our shallow judgments. Make our discernment humble, accountable and attentive to people whom familiar systems overlook. Amen.
Carry it with you
Add an open gate and invite input from one person whose contribution is often missed before making a decision.
